Schedule (PHT): 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
(including asynchronous work hrs)
Total hours: ~12.5 hours/week, 50 hours total
(including asynchronous work hrs)
Venue: online via Discord (regular meetings)
and Zoom (talks)
In this 4-week program, students will be working with their mentors to formulate their research topic proposals.
To supplement this, they will also be attending STEM research/climate change talks and participating in career development/college application workshops. By the end of the program, each mentee is expected to complete their proposal and present it to their Climatry cohort.
To support students in ideating feasible and effective research topics, professors and industry professionals will give talks on the different fields of climate change research, how to write scientific research proposals well, etc. Each mentee will also be partnered with a graduate student mentor from the US who does research in their area of interest.
We believe that this mentorship program will grant PSHS students a research experience they can utilize during the academic year. Furthermore, the program provides the student mentees the opportunity to listen, interact, and converse with highly-regarded professors and graduate students from the US. These aspects combined make a unique experience that will count for the Summer Immersion Program (SIP) requirement in the PSHS curriculum.
Mentee Selection and Pairing
All current Grade 10 students of PSHS will be invited to apply for Climatry’s program this summer. They will be selected using the following criteria:
-
Personal statement
Research interest, educational aspirations, and outreach involvement (especially in
climate change) will be reviewed.
2. Research topic selection
Availability of mentors will be considered when selecting mentees for the program.
3. Letter of recommendation from their current research teacher
Grade 10 research teachers will complete a recommendation form for each applicant
focusing on their intellectual curiosity and work ethic.
4. Interview
Applicants will be given the opportunity to showcase their personality and communication
skills through a 20-minute interview with the Climatry team.
Once selected, each student will be paired with a graduate student mentor (1:1) who will work with them to complete their topic proposal in 4 weeks of the program.
Research Categories
Each mentor will be able to select 1-3 of the following categories which will be used to match them with a student interested in the same category. As an organization that promotes climate change, Climatry requires that the students’ proposals be related (directly or indirectly) to climate change. It is highly encouraged for the mentors to select categories in their current or previous field of specialization. The descriptions of each category are listed on page X of the SI.

TAKING ROOT
mentee's proposal presentation
On July 14, 2022, we celebrated our mentees' journey with Climatry as they presented their completed topic proposals. Check out the fruits of their labor with Climatry as they take root of their climate advocacies. Click on the image above to watch the Facebook Live!

Climatry 2022 Mentee
Being a Climatry mentee was one of the most fun, exhausting, inspiring, skill-developing, and valuable experiences I've ever had in my life.
Laza Butkovich
Cliamtry 2022 Mentor
...it was a rewarding experience, and I got to think about science that is tangential to my current PhD research.
..would recommend it to other grad students at UCSB.

Climatry 2021 Mentor
I would absolutely recommend this program — it's a great volunteering experience and a great way to practice teaching.

Climatry 2021 Mentee
Climatry was a great experience—during that time, I managed to learn so much more about research and practice the skills I would need for the next school year.

Cliamtry 2021 Mentor
Climatry made me take a step back from my research and explain it to someone eager but very unaware of my field. It was fun to hear about their creative solutions and ideas.
